The Dr. Tail Right-Handed Hoof Knife with Narrow Blade is a compact farrier knife for precise, controlled hoof trimming. Its slim stainless steel blade finishes in a turned hook tip that cleans out the collateral grooves and opens up the sole, while the main edge pares the sole, frog and bars. A shaped wooden handle fixed with two brass rivets fills the palm and gives a secure grip for steady, accurate cuts.

Key Features

  • Right-handed blade, made to be held in the right hand and drawn toward the trimmer for natural, controlled cuts.
  • Narrow blade gives fine control in tight areas such as the collateral grooves, central sulcus and around the bars.
  • Turned hook tip lifts out packed dirt, loose sole and frog flaps, and opens tracts for inspection.
  • Stainless steel blade holds a keen edge and resists rust.
  • Brushed satin finish on the blade with a clean, smooth bend at the tip.
  • Shaped wooden handle fits the hand naturally and reduces fatigue during long trimming sessions.
  • Two solid brass rivets secure the blade firmly in the handle.
  • Laser marked with the Dr. Tail logo.

Clinical and Farrier Uses

  • Paring dead, flaky sole during routine trims and before shoeing.
  • Trimming ragged frog tissue and cleaning the frog clefts.
  • Trimming and tidying the bars.
  • Exploring and opening suspected abscess tracts and areas of white line separation.
  • Cleaning the collateral grooves to check for thrush.
  • Routine claw trimming in cattle, sheep and goats.

How It's Used

  • Clean the hoof thoroughly with a hoof pick and brush so you can see the sole, frog and white line clearly.
  • Hold the knife firmly in your right hand, with your left hand bracing the hoof for control.
  • Pare the sole with short, shallow strokes, always cutting away from your body and the hand holding the hoof.
  • Use the hook tip to clean the collateral grooves and the central sulcus of the frog.
  • Trim only loose, dead tissue; stop when you reach firm, waxy sole.
  • Wipe the blade clean between hooves and between animals.

Ideal For

  • Right-handed farriers and trimmers
  • Equine and large animal veterinarians
  • Horse owners who maintain hooves between farrier visits
  • Livestock owners trimming cattle, sheep and goat claws
  • Farrier students and training programs

Care

  • Clean off hoof material after every use and dry the blade completely.
  • Hone the edge regularly with a fine stone or hoof knife sharpener; a sharp knife needs less force and is safer.
  • Sharpen only the beveled side of the blade and lightly remove any burr from the flat side.
  • Keep the wooden handle out of standing water to prevent swelling and cracking; an occasional coat of linseed or mineral oil keeps the wood in good condition.
  • Store with the blade covered or in a tool roll.

Safety Notice: Hoof knives are very sharp. Always cut away from yourself and from the hand holding the hoof, and keep out of reach of children.
