The Dr. Tail Equine Molar Spreader Forceps are the essential first step in oral cheek tooth extraction. Their wedge-shaped jaws are inserted into the space between two teeth and, as the handles close, gently push the teeth apart. This gradually stretches and breaks down the periodontal ligament, loosening the tooth so it can be removed with molar forceps.
Key Features
- Wedge-shaped jaws open the interdental space gradually and evenly.
- At 19" long, the handles give controlled force with your hands outside the mouth.
- Knurled grips with ball-tipped ends stay secure and comfortable during sustained pressure.
- A solid pivot joint gives smooth, stable action.
- Made from corrosion-resistant stainless steel that is easy to clean.
How It's Used
With the horse sedated and a local nerve block fully effective, the gingiva is elevated around the tooth. The spreader is inserted into the interdental space on one side of the tooth and closed slowly, then repeated on the other side, often starting with a smaller spreader. Equine dental literature stresses patience: this step can take from seconds up to around 20 minutes, and closing the spreader too quickly or forcing it in the wrong position can fracture the crown or loosen neighboring teeth. Once the tooth is mobile, extraction continues with molar forceps.
Ideal For
- Equine veterinarians and equine dental technicians
- Preparing cheek teeth for oral extraction
- Pairing with Dr. Tail three-prong and four-prong molar forceps
