The Dr. Tail Equine Four Prong Compound Cap Forceps are designed for removing retained deciduous premolar caps in young horses. Four prongs grip the cap securely, while the compound action linkage multiplies grip force at the jaws so the cap can be lifted off with controlled, gentle pressure.

Key Features

  • Four prongs give a secure four-point hold on the cap.
  • Multiple pivots increase grip force with less hand effort.
  • Spring-loaded handles reopen the jaws automatically for quick repositioning.
  • The compact 12" length is easy to control around the front cheek teeth.
  • Curved, contoured handles are comfortable to use one-handed.
  • Made from corrosion-resistant stainless steel that is easy to clean.

About Retained Caps

Caps are the remains of deciduous (baby) premolars that have not shed and still sit on top of the erupting permanent teeth. They are most common in horses aged about 2 to 5 years and can cause discomfort, quidding and bitting problems. Most caps come off on their own, but retained caps in horses up to five years old should be removed.

How It's Used

With the horse sedated and a speculum in place, the cap is checked for readiness: removal is appropriate once the boundary between the cap and the permanent tooth is visible. The prongs are seated around the cap and gentle pressure, with slight wiggling if needed, lifts it free; ready caps often release with only mild pressure. Any sharp root spicule left behind should also be removed, as it can irritate the gums.

Ideal For

  • Equine veterinarians and equine dental technicians
  • Dental exams in 2 to 5-year-old horses and young horses starting training
  • Building a complete young-horse dental kit
