The tool is built for a firm, non slip grip on smooth or awkwardly shaped teeth. Both jaws carry deep serrated teeth along their gripping edges: one jaw is broad and curved to cup the tooth, while the opposing narrower jaw bites in from the other side. Together they hold retained caps, small cheek teeth and fractured crowns securely, without needing excessive squeezing force.

Available in 13", 16", 19" and 21" lengths.

Key Features

  • Deep serrations grip firmly on smooth caps, worn crowns and irregular fragments.
  • The broad curved jaw cups the tooth on one side while the narrow jaw bites in on the other for a stable hold.
  • The offset head seats the jaws squarely on the tooth and keeps your view clear.
  • Available from 13" for front cheek teeth, caps and ponies, up to 21" for full reach in large horses.
  • A strong, adjustable screw joint keeps the jaw action smooth and aligned.
  • Contoured handles are comfortable and easy to control.
  • Made from corrosion-resistant stainless steel that is easy to clean.
  • Laser-marked Dr. Tail logo and model number

Clinical Uses

  • Retained premolar caps, the remains of baby premolars, most common in horses aged about 2 to 5 years.
  • Small or loose cheek teeth that have already been loosened.
  • Fractured crowns and large fragments, where smooth or pronged jaws would slip.

How It's Used

For caps, removal is appropriate once the boundary between the cap and the permanent tooth is visible; the serrated jaws are seated around the cap and gentle pressure, with slight wiggling if needed, lifts it free. Ready caps often release with only mild pressure, and any sharp root spicule left behind should also be removed. For cheek teeth, the tooth is prepared first: sedation and a local nerve block, gingival elevation and gradual widening of the interdental spaces with molar spreaders. The jaws are then seated firmly on the crown and the tooth is loosened with slow, low-amplitude oscillation. Avoid twisting, which can fracture the crown.

Ideal For

  • Equine veterinarians and equine dental technicians
  • Dental care in young horses (caps)
  • Extracting loose teeth and retrieving fractured crowns
