The Dr. Tail Equine Split Jaw Molar Spreader Forceps prepare a cheek tooth for oral extraction. The right-angled head pairs a wedge-shaped jaw with a broad, flat opposing jaw. The wedge is seated in the space between two teeth, and closing the handles drives it in gradually, pushing the teeth apart. This stretches and breaks down the periodontal ligament, loosening the tooth so it can then be removed with molar forceps.

Available in 13", 16" and 19" lengths. Also see the Dr. Tail Equine Molar Spreader Forceps 19" (EQI20).

Key Features

  • The wedge jaw and flat opposing jaw open the interdental space gradually and evenly, with controlled force.
  • The right-angled head positions the wedge squarely between the teeth while the handles stay outside the mouth.
  • Smooth, blunt working surfaces spread the teeth without cutting or gouging.
  • Choose 13" for ponies and front cheek teeth, 16" for tighter spaces and all-round use, or 19" for full reach on caudal teeth in larger horses.
  • Knurled grips with ball-tipped ends stay secure and comfortable during sustained pressure.
  • A solid pivot joint gives smooth, stable action.
  • Made from highly polished stainless steel that resists corrosion and is easy to clean.
  • Laser-marked Dr. Tail logo and model number

Why Spreading Matters

Equine cheek teeth are held in their sockets by a strong periodontal ligament and are tightly packed against their neighbors. Spreading the teeth before applying forceps loosens that attachment gradually, which reduces the force needed during extraction and lowers the risk of fracturing the crown or leaving root fragments behind.

How It's Used

With the horse sedated and a local nerve block fully effective, the gingiva is elevated around the tooth. The spreader is positioned in the interdental space on one side of the tooth and closed slowly, then repeated on the other side, often starting with a smaller spreader. Equine dental literature stresses patience: this step can take from seconds up to around 20 minutes, and closing the spreader too quickly or forcing it in the wrong position can fracture the crown or loosen neighboring teeth. Once the tooth is mobile, extraction continues with molar forceps.

Ideal For

  • Equine veterinarians and equine dental technicians
  • Preparing premolars and molars for oral extraction
  • Practices treating horses and ponies of different sizes
  • Pairing with Dr. Tail three-prong and four-prong molar forceps
