The Dr. Tail Equine Wide-Blade Molar Spreader Forceps prepare a cheek tooth for oral extraction. The right-angled head carries two broad, flat blades that close together into a single wedge. Working the wedge into the space between two teeth gradually pushes them apart, which stretches and breaks down the periodontal ligament and loosens the tooth so it can then be removed with molar forceps.

Available in 19" and 21" lengths. For other spreader styles, see the Dr. Tail Split Jaw Molar Spreader (EQI5) and the Molar Spreader Forceps 19" (EQI20).

Key Features

  • Two broad, matching blades close into a smooth wedge that spreads the teeth evenly without cutting or gouging.
  • The right-angled head positions the blades squarely in the interdental space while the handles stay outside the mouth.
  • Choose 19" for most horses or 21" for maximum reach on caudal teeth in larger horses.
  • Long straight handles with knurled grips stay secure and comfortable during slow, sustained pressure.
  • A solid pivot joint gives smooth, stable action.
  • Made from highly polished stainless steel that resists corrosion and is easy to clean.

Why Spreading Matters

Equine cheek teeth are held in their sockets by a strong periodontal ligament and are tightly packed against their neighbors. Spreading the teeth before applying forceps loosens that attachment gradually, which reduces the force needed during extraction and lowers the risk of fracturing the crown or leaving root fragments behind.

How It's Used

With the horse sedated and a local nerve block fully effective, the gingiva is elevated around the tooth. The blades are positioned in the interdental space on one side of the tooth and the spreader is worked slowly, then the process is repeated on the other side, often starting with a narrower spreader. Equine dental literature stresses patience: this step can take from seconds up to around 20 minutes, and working too quickly or forcing the blades in the wrong position can fracture the crown or loosen neighboring teeth. Once the tooth is mobile, extraction continues with molar forceps.

Ideal For

  • Equine veterinarians and equine dental technicians
  • Preparing premolars and molars for oral extraction
  • Practitioners who want a wide-blade option alongside narrower spreaders
  • Pairing with Dr. Tail three-prong and four-prong molar forceps
