Product Details
The DrTail Ramzan Equine Periodontal Elevator Set is a set of long-shafted, pistol-grip dental elevators used by equine veterinarians to loosen a horse's cheek teeth (premolars and molars) before extraction. The thin, angled blades slide down into the space between the tooth and the bony socket and break down the periodontal ligament that holds the tooth in place, so the tooth can then be removed with extraction forceps with less force and less risk of fracture. The set comes in a black roll-up storage pouch with an individual pocket for each instrument.
What is a periodontal elevator?
Every tooth is held in its socket by the periodontal ligament, a band of tough fibers between the root and the bone. In horses, cheek teeth have very long "reserve crowns" that sit deep in the jaw, so these attachments are strong and extend a long way down. A periodontal elevator is a narrow blade that is worked into this ligament space to tear the fibers and gently loosen the tooth. Loosening the tooth properly before using forceps is the single most important step in a safe oral extraction.
Why the Ramzan design?
- Pistol-grip handles – the handle sits at an angle to the shaft, giving a firm, controlled grip so the blade can be pushed and levered with real force without slipping.
- Long shafts – reach the back of the mouth, including the caudal molars, past a full-mouth speculum.
- Angled blade tips – a choice of blade angles lets the clinician reach the cheek (buccal), tongue/palate (lingual/palatal) and between-teeth (interproximal) sides of upper and lower teeth.
- Deep socket insertion – thin blades can be worked progressively deeper along the root, which helps with teeth that have long reserve crowns.
- Stainless steel blades and shafts – rigid, corrosion-resistant and easy to clean.
- Roll-up storage pouch – keeps the set organized and the tips protected between procedures.
Where the elevators fit in a cheek tooth extraction
- Preparation. The horse is sedated and the area is numbed with regional nerve blocks. A full-mouth speculum is placed and the mouth is rinsed and examined with a light and dental mirror; X-rays confirm the tooth and root anatomy.
- Separate the gum. A gingival elevator or dental pick frees the gum (gingiva) from around the tooth.
- Elevate. Periodontal elevators are worked into the ligament space on the cheek side, the tongue/palate side and between the neighbouring teeth, going a little deeper each time. Steady pressure with small levering or rotating movements is used, moving around the whole tooth rather than forcing one spot.
- Spread. Molar spreaders placed between the teeth can be used to further loosen the tooth from its neighbours.
- Extract. Once the tooth is mobile, extraction forceps are applied and the tooth is rocked slowly until it releases, often with a fulcrum to lift it out.
- Aftercare. The socket is checked for remaining fragments, flushed and managed according to the veterinarian's protocol.
Tips: patience during elevation prevents fractured crowns and roots. Work all sides of the tooth, keep the blade against the tooth rather than the bone, and avoid using the elevator as a crowbar against neighbouring teeth.
Tooth extraction in horses is a veterinary procedure that requires sedation, local anesthesia and diagnostic imaging. These instruments are intended for use by licensed veterinarians and trained equine dental professionals working under veterinary supervision.
Care and sterilization
- Rinse off blood and debris straight after use, then scrub the blades with a soft brush and instrument detergent.
- Dry completely before storage, and check the tips for bending or chips.
- Clean and disinfect or sterilize according to your clinic's protocol; confirm handle temperature limits before autoclaving.
- Store each instrument in its own pocket of the roll pouch so the tips don't knock against each other.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a periodontal elevator and extraction forceps?
The elevator loosens the tooth by breaking the ligament that holds it; forceps grip and remove the tooth once it is already loose. Using forceps too early is a common cause of fractured teeth.
Can these be used on incisors or wolf teeth?
This set is designed for cheek teeth. For wolf teeth, see our wolf tooth elevators and wolf tooth extraction forceps.
