The Incisor Extraction and Wolf Tooth Elevator Set is a six piece kit made to help with the extraction of equine incisors, wolf teeth and other small single rooted teeth. Each instrument has a curved concave head with a sharp pointed edge that follows the curved shape of the root, so you can work into the periodontal space and gradually loosen the tooth before delivering it with forceps. Two head widths (5 mm and 9 mm) and three lengths (6", 8" and 9") let you match the elevator to the tooth, the horse and the approach.
Key Features
- Six elevators with different head sizes and profiles cover small wolf teeth through to large adult incisors.
- Concave heads wrap around the curved root surface, keeping the cutting edge against the tooth and away from surrounding bone and soft tissue.
- Sharp pointed tips enter the narrow periodontal space easily to cut the gingival attachment and periodontal ligament.
- 5 mm heads give precise control on wolf teeth, narrow incisors and fragile or resorbed roots.
- 9 mm heads cover more of the root circumference on large incisors and speed up loosening.
- Short 6" instruments give fine control at the front of the mouth; 8" and 9" instruments on heavier handles give extra reach and leverage.
- The 8" instrument has an ergonomic curved heavy handle with a replaceable 9 mm head.
- Supplied in a padded black zipper pouch with red velvet lining to protect the tips in storage and transport.

Clinical Uses
- Extraction of incisors affected by equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH), a painful condition of older horses that often requires removal of several incisors.
- Removal of fractured incisors and incisors with pulp exposure, apical infection or severe periodontal disease.
- Removal of retained deciduous incisors (caps) that fail to shed and push permanent incisors out of alignment.
- Removal of supernumerary, displaced or malaligned incisors.
- Elevation of wolf teeth (first premolars), including small, blind or unerupted wolf teeth that sit below the gum line.
- Loosening of root fragments left behind after a tooth fractures during extraction.
About Incisor and Wolf Tooth Extraction
Equine incisors are long, curved teeth held in their sockets by a strong periodontal ligament. They cannot simply be pulled. Extraction relies on patient, careful elevation: the elevator is worked down around the tooth to break down the ligament little by little until the tooth becomes mobile, then it is removed with small forceps. Rushing this stage or applying too much force is the most common cause of fractured crowns and retained roots.
When several incisors must come out, as is common with EOTRH, or when roots are fractured or hypercementosed, many veterinarians raise a gingival flap and remove some alveolar bone first, then use elevators to finish freeing each tooth. Radiographs taken before and after the procedure help identify affected teeth and confirm complete removal.
Wolf teeth are much smaller, but they have their own risks. The greater palatine artery runs close to the upper wolf tooth on the palatal side, so a well controlled elevator that stays tight against the tooth is important. The small concave heads in this set are well suited to working around the full circumference of the wolf tooth before removing it with forceps.
How It's Used
- The horse is sedated and, where appropriate, regional or local anesthesia is applied. A full mouth speculum or incisor approach is used as needed.
- The gingiva is separated from the tooth around its full circumference.
- A concave head matched to the tooth size is inserted into the periodontal space with the concave side facing the tooth.
- The elevator is advanced along the root with gentle rotation and steady pressure, held for several seconds at each position to fatigue and tear the ligament, then moved around the tooth.
- Work usually starts with a fine 5 mm head and moves to a wider 9 mm head as space opens, or to a longer 9" instrument for deeper roots.
- Once the tooth is moderately mobile it is removed with small extraction forceps, and the socket is checked for remaining fragments.
- The socket is cleaned and managed or closed according to the veterinarian's protocol.
Ideal For
- Equine veterinarians and veterinary dental specialists
- Equine dental practitioners working under veterinary supervision, where permitted
- Equine hospitals and referral clinics treating EOTRH and dental trauma
- Ambulatory practices that need a compact, complete elevator kit for wolf teeth and incisors
- Veterinary schools and dental training programs

Care
- Rinse instruments immediately after use to remove blood and debris before it dries.
- Clean with a neutral pH instrument detergent and a soft brush, paying attention to the concave surface of each head.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before storage to prevent spotting and corrosion.
- Sterilize by autoclave or according to your clinic's protocol.
- Check the tips regularly; a sharp edge makes elevation safer and faster. Hone or replace worn tips as needed.
- Do not use elevators as pry bars against bone or adjacent teeth, as this can bend or chip the tip.
- Store in the padded pouch with tips protected.
Professional Use Notice: This instrument set is intended for use by licensed veterinarians or qualified equine dental professionals working under veterinary supervision. Tooth extraction requires appropriate sedation, analgesia and clinical training.
